Rules for visiting Alcatraz

Getting to Alcatraz requires a valid ticket and a ferry ride. A government issued photo ID is required for every person who books tickets to Alcatraz Island. Government issued photo ID’s are required when purchasing and picking up tickets at the Alcatraz City Cruises Ticketbooth, and may again be required in the boarding area.

Security of Alcatraz

Only standard backpacks, measuring 16” x 20” maximum, are allowed on Alcatraz Island or on the ferry. There are no lockers to leave oversize bags or luggage. Minors under the age of 18 are not allowed to visit Alcatraz Island unless accompanied by an adult, 21 years of age or older. Children under age 12 cannot participate in the Behind the Scenes Tour, regardless of their ticket.

Eating and drinking on Alcatraz Island

Picnicking and consuming food on Alcatraz Island is allowed (standard size backpacks only; picnic baskets or coolers of any size are not allowed) at the dock area from the picnic tables to the restrooms only. Bottled water is allowed on all areas of the Island.

Forbidden items on Alcatraz

Large bags or backpacks are not allowed on the island or in the ferry, and there are no lockers to leave them in, so make sure to plan accordingly. Bicycles, skateboards, roller blades, skates, “wheelie” shoes and weapons are not allowed. Professional equipment, such as tripods, and any commercial photography or filming require prior permission from the National Park Service.
